Training in the Winter

As the nights start drawing in and the cold winter chill fills the air it gradually gets harder and harder to drag yourself out of the house and get to the gym. So what are the alternatives, not training at all or getting some home gym equipment to see you through the colder days.

Motivation in the Cold

You need to think about how the cold will affect your movements, the cold air actually makes your muscles less elastic so you have less movement in them which can slow you down if you are training outside which is why it is good to train indoors in the gym or using some home fitness equipment.
For some training outside would never be an option and in fact find it hard to motivate them to go and work out in the gym let alone go outside in the freezing cold for a run.  For those who don’t like the idea of getting out into the cold some home fitness equipment would be a good alternative.

Home Gym Equipment

There is a vast array of gym equipment available so you can buy the pieces that you want, a treadmill is one of the most popular pieces of home gym equipment because they are simple to use and many of the new styles can be folded away for storage.

If you don’t have a room that would be used for a home gym and you need to have a piece of equipment that will easily fold away the treadmill would be a good choice because they can be folded away and some have wheels so you can move it into a different room to create more space.
If you have a bit more space to accommodate some fitness equipment then you will have your pick of any of the machines including the cross country skier, cross trainer and rowing machine.

For a full body workout a cross trainer is a good choice because it not only moves your arms and legs it also works your core as you move. The movement is a fluid one so your joints don’t experience any unnecessary stress while you are working out. This is something that is beneficial for all in the long term.

A rower is another great piece of equipment that will move the whole body because of the movement on the legs and the resistance on the arms. Once you have the technique perfected you will burn a lot of calories and build a good muscle tone easily and safely. They do require some space so a separate room would be advisable or at least enough space around the machine to properly be able to move.

With your home equipment there is no longer any excuse why you can’t continue to keep fit and train during the colder winter months.

Positive Body Image for the Masses

Isn’t it time that we all started promoting a healthy body image, one that is not just based on the facts and figures of BMI, body fat ratio and a vast number of ways that calculate how overweight you are. Then there are the constant images of super skinny celebs that have even been retouched to make them appear even smaller, promoting a look that isn’t even achievable through constant exercise and dieting.

Time for a Change

With so much negativity and confusion surrounding what size and shape a healthy person should be it is not entirely surprising that there are many people who are not within a comfortable healthy zone. Many people are moving towards the extreme ends of the body scale being pretty overweight or falling into the underweight category. There are so few role models that have a healthy sized body and many young women are starting to believe that the emaciated images continuously out in front of them is in fact a representation of health.

There are some people that are trying to combat this false representation of the female form, mybodygallery.com is a website that posts pictures of women that put in their size ratios for people to see what other women with their measurements look like and to discourage people from feeling inadequate. It is also designed to show how differently people carry their weight, not everyone carries it on their tummy or their bum. Not all individuals who weigh a lot look like they are overweight and not all those who weigh little look very skinny, everybody is different!

How Should you Measure Your Health

It is time to encourage healthy fit bodies and to make people believe that it is achievable within the realms of their body. You can get such different results from different places that it can be hard to genuinely know whether you are healthy or not. You can be within your healthy BMI and still feel and look fairly heavy and you can be way over your BMI and be lean and toned which is why it can be so confusing.

You should look at your body and think about how you feel the way it looks and how comfortable you feel within your own skin because this is often a big indicator about how healthy your body is. If you are feeling uncomfortable and finding it hard to move about with ease then it is probable that you could do with losing a few pounds to become healthier and enjoy your life more.

It is possible to lose weight sensibly through eating a healthy varied diet and exercising, by doing simple exercises on a treadmill or exercise bike you will start to increase your metabolism and your body’s fat burning efficiency.  Doing simple cardio exercise will also promote good health of your heart and lungs making them stronger which can only be a good thing.

Now is the time to start enjoying your body and encourage it to become its natural healthy shape without strain or force.
